The vibraphone is a set of pitched, metal bars arranged like a piano keyboard. Beneath each bar is a cylindrical tube which houses a small, rotating, fan-like shutter controlled by a foot pedal. The rotating shutter sustains the sound and adds a distinct vibrato or tremolo effect. Vibraphone mallets are made with a hard rubber core wrapped in softer yarn.
